Determination

"The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination"-Laura Langman

Some people give up easily. If they can't get it in the first couple of goes it's impossible-It goes in the too hard basket. Somehow that basket get mentioned a lot but no one ever mentions the "just-hard-enough" basket. Thats because the people who use that basket are usually the ones who don't make a fuss over it, they just do it. They are the ones with determination and grace. Our society couldn't survive without these people.

There is no point half doing things. If you do half the work you get half the result. It's really quite simple.

I hope that as many people as possible will use their just-hard-enough basket.

Playing against the boys

So i was thinking about a topic for this next blog and eventually I settled on my experiences playing netball in a boys competition....

I love netball :)
I play several times a week and when an opportunity to play in a boys comp came up mid way through last year I immediately agreed to join. Playing the boys is a lot different to playing the girls in so many ways. The boys play a much more ariel style of game. They are rougher but can often rush the ball down court at the speed of light only for the ball to go out of court. One thing I have also noticed is they like to show off a lot and can tend to lose the ball for that reason. The competition I play in is the only Junior boys netball comp in Victoria (that I know of). There are quite a number of state reps playing and some of the guys are amazing. It can be hard as I am playing with mostly boys in primary school and the competition goes right up to 17 years of age. So far we haven't won a game. I haven't lost hope yet though. I was chatting to one of the club umpires the other day and she said she had been umpiring the boys competition since it started and that all the other teams had started out like us. That made me think of what potential some of our boys are sitting on. There are heaps of boys in the comp that have represented Victoria and I can't wait for the day when one of our boys does :)

Playing against the boys is different but I believe it is making me into a better netballer.

Well there you have it :)

Women in a (Mens) Sporting World

Reading the newspaper the other day I came across an article about the Matildas captain Melissa Barbieri. In the article it talks about how she plays in the australian womens soccer team but also works as a school nurse as her main source of income. A school nurse earns more than an female australian soccer player!!! I don't know if it's just me but something doesn't seem right here. And it's across many other sports too. They compared male and female counterparts for many different sports and basketball was the only one that was close!

I'm not sure what it is but i think it comes from the past expectations of the man providing and the lady looking after the children. These days are gone and I believe it is about time men and women were payed equally, all across the board. Sports players, nurses, teachers..... everyone should be payed equally but the fact of the matter is that while Ricky Ponting (mens cricket captain) makes over a million dollars a year while his female counterpart, Karen Rolton, wouldn't even earn half that amount.

A dumb quote from a male sports person:
"I want to kick 70 or 80 goals this season, whichever comes first" Barry Hall (AFL player)

I will now leave you to ponder and muse over what I have just said/written....

3rd time lucky?

Okay so again there is no one reading this but I'm enjoy writing so I'm gonna keep going :)
So last night was "The Big Gig". Yes thats what we've been calling it. Afterburn, my mates band, had their first paid gig. Albeit, one of the guys dads 50th birthday party but a first gig is a first gig.
It was so fun. They had actually written some of their own songs!!! And they were actually good!! Although it was quite funny watching all of the different guys. Daniel (lead singer and lead guitarist) was way into it right from the start. He was quite good in a funny and entertaining kind of way (he always makes me laugh when i see him anyway). Connor (Drums) was really good too (although i think he needed to lose the hat). He practises like an hour every single day!!! Jarrod (Bass guitar) took a while to get into it but by the last song he was way into it doing the whole head banging and dancing thing too. Ben (Keyboard) looked bored until Rach and Taylor bought out the camera and then he started posing and stuff (lol). Matt (guitar-not sure what type) was pretty good- kinda half way between Jarrod and Daniel.
Me and Nicola and Aisling had a great time dancing with Rach, Taylor, Georgia and a whole heap of others!
All I can say is i can't wait for the next gig!!!

That is all for now,
I shall keep you posted :):):)

  • The Royal Wedding: Well I don't really have anything against the royals so good luck to Kate and Will :)
